Our History

The Heart of Innerkip since 1856

George Lee set aside some land near the river for a cemetery  and transferred this land to the Innerkip Cemetery Company for the use of the community.  The deed conveyance was dated April 10th, 1856, but this deed was not registered and was destroyed in a fire, so Mr. Lee gave another deed on September 9, 1861, which was registered on November 10th, 1861.

In 1873 the Innerkip Cemetery Company became a body Corporate, and a new deed was made out on September 13th, 1873.  The Innerkip Cemetery Company was composed of the following persons, the shares being issued at $8 a share, making $500 capital:  Andrew Nicol, A.L. Brown, Alexander Hill, John Hislop, William Cowing Sr., Dr. D.W. Clement, Charles Vincent, William Cowing Jr., James Hotson, John M. Wilson, James Lockhart, William R. MacLean, Robert Nicol, Francis Sim, Abraham Brown, Ascott Lock, Jonathan Cowing, William Milburn, Joseph Matheson, and George Hart.

A mausoleum was erected in 1927.

James Hotson was the first president of the Company and Charles Vincent was the first secretary-treasurer.  In 1890 more land was purchased at the south from Edward Lock.  In 1958 more land was acquired.  In 1994 an adjacent 2.6 acres to the cemetery was purchased from Carl Matheson.

The Innerkip Cemetery now covers approximately 10 acres.  The first columbarium was added in 2012 and a second one in 2022.
